27 Dresses Review
I saw a movie again. One of those romantic-comedy things with a less than stellar ending. Shock and surprise - the girl end up with the guy! I don’t think that’s giving anything away since that’s always the way it happens. Don’t get me wrong - it’s what I always want to have happen. If it doesn’t, I’m disappointed.
This time I’m disappointed but not for that reason. The unfortunate part about this particular movie is that every single person in it is a completely unimaginative stereotype that cannot change or be changed. There’s the conniving blond, the cynical guy who is afraid of commitment, the dopey father who can’t deal with female children and, of course, the stupid main character who simply sits back and allows people to walk all over her. There would be no movie if someone gave her even a single vertebra. I’m willing to donate my coccyx just to help her out a little.
‘Jane’, as she is called, spends her life helping other women get married. She demeans herself in every way imaginable and hopes to attract her one true love in this way - her boss. Lucky for her, another guy, Kevin, comes along who wants to use her pathetic nature to get ahead. He pities her, she falls for him and, after he humiliates her to millions of people, and commits (what for me would be) many unforgivable acts, she marries him. Now that’s my idea of a love story. A girl who is willing to demean herself for love.
My very favorite part, though, is near the end, when Kevin demands that she “Get over here” after having previously told her that she should say no to people. Obviously he means she should say no to OTHER people so that she would have free time for him to control her life.
Ah, l’amour… If this is love, then I say Blech!
