Work Place Frustration

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Yahoo had a story about people leaving their jobs or wanting to leave their jobs mainly because of their boss. Bosses realize that so many of the jobs out there that require a college education in a specific field can really be done by just about anyone with a brain so they see employees as being worth less than a dime a dozen. If an employee asks for anything, then they are considered too much of a hassle and are encouraged to look elsewhere for a job.

What’s that? You want your raise to go through on time? Well this job is for people who really love the business, not greedy people out to make money.

What’s that? You don’t want to work third shift anymore even though I told you months ago that I would change your schedule and then gave the better shift to the guy with less seniority? Maybe you should look for a job elsewhere because lots of people have it worse than you.

What’s that? You want to take a week of vacation time all at once? Well this job is more suited for people who are really dedicated to their jobs. No, you can’t roll that vacation time over.

Not to mention the fact that if you stay at your job for years and years, they’ll have to eventually give you raise after raise after raise. What’s that going to do to payroll?!  It’s better for them if you stay for as long as they can use you and then you move on.

Personality Profiles

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

I had the chance to participate in a personality class at work today with my coworkers. Learned that they’re all outgoing or dominant while I’m more logical and precise. Even better, found out that my personality type was the one that annoyed them most. Great. Hopefully, the entire class will be a learning experience on how to deal with each other better.

Inspirational Posters

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

So I’m sitting in a “Computer Training Center” trying to stay busy while everyone around me learns more about the computer systems and programs. On the walls around me are a series of those ridiculous inspirational posters.

‘Persevere’ shows a runner ‘persevering’ up a hill with a quote about going the extra mile.

‘Goals’ is combined with a foggy photo of the Golden Gate bridge with some blurb about goals being bridges. Sublte.

‘Risk’ shows a schooner sailing around icebergs, ‘Courage,’ a windsurfer under a giant wave, and ‘Success’ is compared with a canoe.

Really? A canoe? How exactly is success a canoe.

My guess is the development team for these posters had the following conversation:

“We still need a photo for ‘Success’?
“What about the canoe photo?”
“I don’t know.”
“It’s a great photo. There’s a lake and a sunset and a canoe.”
“Yeah, it is a great photo. Nobody’s disputing that it’s a great photo, but how is it ‘Success’?
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s a successful canoe. Let’s just wrap this up and go home.”
“Fine.”

That’s what I call inspirational.
