What a nifty idea the dropdowndeals promo codes idea is. You download their program to your computer and it recognizes the web sites you’re going to and then it tells you what kind of deals are available for the site. And it’s free.

I’ve had a couple times just in the last week when I’ve thought of something to do and then decided not to because I couldn’t find coupons to use. The budget is tight for most of us, so I’m sure I’m not the only one doing this.

Things You Can’t Get Out of Your Head

My husband is trying to expand our kid’s game playing repetoir so he has opened up the world of 80s games to them. Hero Quest was the first one they tried out but apparently, I takes a VERY long time. I think they had just finished the first phase when they ran out of steam. In addition to that, he’s got them hooked on The Gummi Bears cartoon, so I constantly have the theme song running through my head.

Tri-Ominos

Another ‘blast from the past’ type game that I recently started playing is called Tri-Ominos. Two to six players can play this game with three sided pieces like dominoes. But with this game you keep score. ( Maybe dominoes has a way to keep score but, not the way I played.) Each player draws the predetermined number of tiles from a pile and then each plays one in turn, building on the previously played pieces. You have to match two or three numbers to be able to place the tile. If you can’t find a place to play one of your tiles, you have to draw from the ‘well’ until you find one that you can play. The first one out of tiles wins the round.

Score is kept by adding up all the numbers on the tile you play and adding that to your score. There are bonuses to be had along the way including one where the winner of the round gets and additional 25 points PLUS the sum of all the opponents remaining tiles. The first to reach 400 is the game winner.

alk about fun and easy to learn. For this game, you make lines of up to 6 tiles. Each line consists of either one of each shape (there are 6) but all the same color, or 6 different colors but all the same shape. The lines can interconnect so in the end it looks a but like a scrabble board without the board or letters.

Since it’s all shapes and colors, this game is great for the young crowd. But adults can add an element of strategy to it by blocking others or maximizing their points by putting down their tiles in smaller groups and hitting the same points from a line multiple times.

This game is for 2-4 players and takes about 30-40 minutes to play (unless someone thinks really hard about their moves).

About the only time I can recommend getting cigars is when you’re passing them out in honor of a new baby. If you find that you need some cheap acid cigars for just that occasion, you can find them pretty easily on the internet and have them delivered to your front door step (or your PO box if you prefer). I prefer cigars for the containers they come in which are truely useful little storage areas.

Indian Jones DVD Adventure Game

Recently my son got a board game called ‘Indian Jones DVD Adventure Game’ and he has quickly fallen in love with it. He often tries to get other people to play it with him, but failing that, he’s been known to play it on his own – the draw is that powerful.

He likes the interaction with the DVD including the movie clips (he hasn’t seen all the movies yet). Near the end he has to run for his life and he likes the way it gives him a thrill. He enjoys the way the points add up quickly at the end and come from many different sources (different cards and relics).

He doesn’t like the fact that it’s sometimes hard to get others to play (it’s not universally loved) but other than that he’s a huge fan.

This game is for up to 4 players, ages 8 and up (but my 7 year old plays just fine).

Learning Progress

My eldest has learned to generalize. He saw a pair of shoes tied together and thrown over a wire near our house and thought this an oddity. But when we crossed town and saw another pair of shoes on display in a similar way he declared, “People don’t like their shoes.”

I had to agree.

Today he declared, “People don’t like their pants.” He’s learned to extrapolate.

Christmas-y

Some weird snafu in the weather around here. It’s the middle of November and it’s really pretty warm. So warm that I’m opening up the doors and windows to heat the house. It takes away from the Christmas-y feeling I usually get when I eat my husband’s spiced pecans (covered in cinnamon and sugar – and roasted in butter).

Mind you , it’s not going to stop me. Just make me wish it was a little colder.

Don’t Want to Deal With the Post Storm Clean Up?

After yesterday’s huge storm, getting a rental far, far away from here doesn’t sound bad. I’m pretty sure that sitting in a car as the hail pounds us and the branches fall on us and the roofs hit us is about as stressful as it can get. I don’t want to clean up what used to be my yard so getting away is a good idea. Maybe the wind will blow the mess away.

Makes me think that Outer Banks rentals are a good way to go.

Carolina Designs is one company that has a ton of rentals in the Outer Banks in one place so you don’t have to scour the web.

And Fall is a great time to go with all the community events going on. I’ve got to imagine that any season (where you’re in a house on the beach) is a good time to go.
