Credit Card Crisis

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

I don’t know what it is with the media and their need to sensationalize that which is sensational enough.  In the past week i have seen two headlines that completely misrepresented the article.  One said that Americans have more debt on their credit cards and “few” pay on time.  What the article really said is that “fewer” are making on time payments.  You can see that there’s room for a huge difference in real numbers there.

Another (also having to do with credit card debt) said that Americans charge up their cards because they don’t understand debt.  What the article was really about was that Americans don’t usually know the formula for compound interest off the tops of their heads.  Now there’s a shock.  It does not follow that we don’t understand debt, though.

That particular article based it’s conclusions on some study that presented people with questions about how long it would take to pay off debt.  Then (and I mean immediately after, without answering the question presented) it said  a “full 18.6%” (a number that’s not full) didn’t know how to respond to how long it would take for their balance to double.  It doesn’t say how the question was worded or what the possible answers were so I find I don’t know how to respond to this report except with a degree of doubt since many factors could effect how long it takes for a balance to double.

It’s SOOO annoying when they write articles that seem to have edited out every other sentence and end up providing nothing similar to information.

Stock Market Up

Monday, February 25th, 2008

I know the thing that makes the stock market fair is the fact that it is unpredictable.  Everyone has an even playing field as long as there’s no insider trading going on.  I certainly am not doing any of that but I’m still frustrated.  Why is the market going up when everyone KNOWS we’re in a recession.  That is if you don’t include the Fed.

State Taxes

Friday, February 15th, 2008

I’ve been so excited about the return I knew I’d be getting from the feds that I completely forgot to do anything about my state return.  I’ll probably owe because they don’t take out taxes properly.  For those of you looking for forms, go to the website for your states Department of Revenue.  If you’re in Arizona, make a note of the  date on the ‘December Tax Facts’.  When they got behind, why didn’t they just skip a couple months?

Car Insurance, Anybody?

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Maybe you’re thinking about getting one of those smart cars this year. They have good fuel economy and they’re kinda cool looking just because they don’t look like every other car on the road. On top of that, you KNOW no one is going to ask to borrow your car to help them move.

Well if you get a new car, you might decide you want new car insurance. Perhaps your current company is too big and impersonal? Try looking for a company that is going to be there to help if something goes wrong. Cost-U-Less insurance has been around since 1980 and have offices in Southern California to help you out. Maybe you thought Ukiah car insurance (for example) would be hard to come by? With Cost-U-Less, it’s not. You can go online and get a quote, or call their offices and get a quote over the phone.

Either way, make sure you check them out before you get that new car so your insurance is ready when you drive off the lot.

Federal Rebates

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

How much do you think your rebate will be for?  They can range from nothing (for the young who don’t work) to an unknown amount for couples with lots of kids (today that means you have more than one, but I’m using that in the old school sense where you have more than 7).

Whatever you get, keep all the paperwork you get with it and read it carefully.  One (and only one so far) article out there says that the rebate will be coming off any money you would have been getting next year.  If true, I don’t know what that means for people who who owe or who wouldn’t be getting as much back as this rebate is for.  I would GUESS that it doesn’t have to be paid back because it seems there would be more information about that if it did need to be paid back next year.

Anyway, make sure you read the information really well and keep it with your tax records.

And if the IRS doesn’t have your current address, make sure you send in a change of address form.

Save on Car Insurance

Monday, February 11th, 2008

If you like to drive insurance is a must. It protects you from life’s little accidents. Cost-U-Less has insurance that can fit into a student’s budget. They’ve been helping people get coverage since 1980 and they specialize in giving insurance to students. If you have questions about insurance, they have answers.

Refinancing loans in 2008

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

One thing about the mortgage industry is that you can always look back and see what led to the problems that are current. Runaway inflation and unemployment 30 years ago led to super high interest rates back then. The short recession in 2000 and 2001 led to low interest rates to spark the economy which led to more risky loans which led to more foreclosures and an over-saturated housing market.

With the fed dropping interest rates again there are many out there that should take advantage and get a bad credit mortgage refinance. There is no reason to stay in an adjustable rate mortgage because interest rates will only go up from here over the next ten years. Historically, interest rates are never this low.

Whether you need florida mortgage refinancing or california mortgage refinancing, you should hurry up and get it done before things go back up. Because things will go back up, sooner or later. It’s inevitable.

When you’re looking around for the best rate, the internet can be a wonderful tool for comparing the different rates that are out there and available to you. This site has all of the tools and calculators that you will need when trying to figure out just what loan that you need.

And one last piece of advice. Don’t take out a huge chunk of cash just because you think you can afford it now. Try to pay off your house. Let the amount that you owe on the house go down instead of up. Refinancing can be an important step in that process.

I’m Pushing Back My Retirment

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

My retirement accounts lost money for the first time ever. It figures – I just found out how to take some money out of just bonds (the safe but little gains approach) and put them in something else. I didn’t go crazy and take out everything and put it in international stocks (which actually did fine last quarter) or something.

So I guess that means we’re in a recession. Yes, the world revolves around my portfolio. As my accounts go, so goes the world. It couldn’t be the other way around.

I’m happy to report that since I didn’t have much saved for retirement, I didn’t lose much. I’m thinking I’ll just ride it out with things as they are and see what happens next quarter.

To Buy or Not to Buy

Friday, February 1st, 2008

I finally know a person who does their own trades. I was just about to ask more about how they do it when I had to run off and dig a mud ball out of my daughter’s mouth.

I feel so uneducated in this arena, I think I might want to look into talking to a stock or futures broker. It just seems so intimidating. On the other hand, it’s not like I wouldn’t be able to sell what I’ve invested in, unlike my house (at least I think that’s how it works) which I didn’t have nearly as much apprehension about buying.

Maybe this would be easier if they used a companies full name instead of just a stock symbol so I knew without having to look it up what is doing well.

File Your Taxes ASAP

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Undoubtedly you have heard me talk about what you need to get together in order to file your taxes and for those of you who believe you’ll be getting a refund, I know you have scurried to get things in order. Then again today is the day that those things were all supposed to be mailed by so you may need to wait just a couple more days before you can begin in earnest.

Once you have your W-2s, your 1099s and know how much you contributed to your 401(k) for your Saver’s Tax Credit you can start filling out the forms. Are you going to hop from library to post office and from town to town in search of your 1040? No, because I told you earlier that you want to go online to get those.

What I forgot to tell you about was the handy dandy efile. Sure I get the forms from the IRS web site but in the end I find a program that lets me efile so I can get my refund faster. It’s something I’ve done most of the past 8 years and often the program finds credits I didn’t know existed (like the aforementioned Saver’s Tax credit).

Save yourself some time and money. Skip the search for forms and be brave enough to do this yourself (with the help of a program that asks all the right questions).

Rate Cuts Helpful?

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

In case you haven’t heard it yet, there’s TONS of buzz about the Fed cutting interest rates again.  It is fully expected that they will but if something weird happens and they don’t, it pretty much spells a drop in the stocks which rallied only yesterday on speculation that the cut would happen.

The question is, are these cuts actually helping the economy or are they just affecting things temporarily and a recession is inevitable?  Unfortunately I think it is the latter but time will tell.  In the mean time, you might look into refinancing your mortgage and benefit from lower interest rates.

For Those in Need of a Business Loan

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

One of the scariest parts of having your own business is when you need to ask for a business loan. Where do you go? What will they want to know about you and your business before they give you a loan? If you are rejected by one lender, where do you turn?

America One Unsecured has the answers to all these questions. In their FAQ section, you can find out about some of the pitfalls of applying for business loans before you even start. They tell you when you need a co-signer, what kind of credit you need in order to be approved, under what circumstances less than perfect credit can still let you get approved and much more.

Their application process is quick and easy (just 2 pages of information to fill out) and if you are approved, you can see the loan funded in just a week.

In the end, if they find that they are unable to approve you for a loan, they can refer you to another lender who may be able to do so.

With such an open, non-threatening environment, you can apply for your business loan confidant that America One Uninsured is there to help you achieve your goals without the unnecessary stress so many banks out there will give you.

Good Luck!

Credit repair

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Some problems in life are easier to fix than others. If the sink breaks, you call a plumber. If the car breaks, you go to the mechanic. If you’re leg breaks, you go to the doctor. Or if you’re lucky and especially gifted at any of these skill sets, you take care of the problem yourself. One problem that many do not even notice is an incorrect credit report. This problem requires immediate credit repair.

At any time that you’re looking to buy something that requires credit, it is always best to first know what you’re credit score and credit report look like. You may need to repair credit before going to buy that house or car.

Each credit bureau is required to give you your credit report at least once a year if you request it. Don’t go to any of the websites that advertise on television. They’re all just a big scam. Get your credit report for free from the government required free site then look for problems with your credit.

To get these problems fixed you may need a credit repair service like that offered at this site. The testimonials were filled with people that had their credit scores jump up hundreds of points and saving hundreds of dollars by having lower interest rates. The big credit bureaus have so much power and such a huge bureaucracy that it’s a good idea to have someone on your side in the fight to fix your broken credit.

How to Be Nouveau Riche

Friday, January 25th, 2008

The term Nouveau Riche is supposed to be insulting but, to be honest, I wouldn’t actually mind being able to count myself as one of the Nouveau Riche. But exactly how I would get into the group is the real question. It seems like being able to properly invest would be a great benefit in such a quest but it takes a knowledge of investing that I don’t yet possess.

Fortunately, there is an online school that can offer help that is perfect for this. It’s called Nouveau Riche University. You can tell by the name what they are looking to do – offer you a program based on the principles used at higher education institutions to help you gain the knowledge you need to become one of the Nouveau Riche group.

They offer classes on real estate buying, flipping, and holding. They will teach you how computers and what software can help you create your own wealth. You don’t have to spend the day in the classroom waiting for some stuffy professor to get to the part that might help you. Their distance learning classes are centered on topics that have a specific focus so that you lean about what you really want to learn about.

So now that markets are down, find out why this is the time to buy and just how to go about doing it so that when 2009 rols around, you can be looking toward becoming a part of the Nouveau Riche group.

Come On, Tax Forms!

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

I’m driving myself mad.  I’ve gone through the third draft of my taxes because I’m so excited about getting them done! Each time a new tax form comes in the mail, I redo the numbers getting rid of some approximations and putting in the real amounts.  It always works out better after I do this because I always overestimate my approximations.  I end up happy but perpetually wanting that last form to come in so  I can actually file the darn thing and be done with it.

By the way, now that it’s the modern internet age and you can’t get real forms anywhere, remember that irs.gov is the place to go to get all those forms you didn’t even know you needed.  Like when you got to line 21 on Schedule A and found out you need Form 2106 to report unreimbursed employee expenses.

Get Some Address Labels

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Some may think it’s lazy, but I would say it saves me a hassle when I use labels instead of writing out my return address. I mean, I already abbreviate my first name and as silly as it sounds, Piccadilly is not that easy to spell. I love it when they come for free in the mail (ok, I’m really supposed to make a contribution to whatever organization sent them) but there never seem to be enough of them.

Growing up my parents had lick and stick address labels but now you get to peel and stick them making them a million times better. No more gross after taste. On top of that, the variety is huge. You can get some that look formal, some that look funny and some that are just for Christmas cards with little effort, time and money on your part.

Maybe your address labels will inspire you to start a correspondence with someone just so you can send out some of your labels. Later you say, “Did you notice my address label?” and they say, “Why, yes. Quite striking indeed!”

Fed Rate Cut

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

OH – MY – GOSH!  I was SHOCKED when I heard about the fed’s move to reduce the prime rate by 3/4 of a point.  For a group that has moved in small increments in the past, this is a HUGE jump.

In one place I read this was the biggest adjustment of the rate in 12 years and in another, I heard it was the biggest in 24 years.  Either way, it’s been a long time since they’ve done this kind of thing.

Also, they did it during an emergency session so market’s haven’t had much time to react.  AND there have been reports that another cut on top of this one will be made at the next regularly scheduled session in about a week.  Some suspect that the next cut will be as big or bigger than this one.  If that happens, I’ll be even more shocked than I am now.  I think having such a huge drop in the rate may be a bad thing, though I’m not educated in anyway on that.  It just feels like a bad idea (and as I’m sure we all know, the market is in tune with MY feelings).

Do You Pamper Your Car?

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

The Arizona weather can really do damage to your car both inside and out.  It’ll dry out your dash board and make it crack; it’ll erode your finish and you end up with peeling paint.  In the case of my parents, it made their license plates peel.  The design and state are completely gone.  I’ve though recently about getting a car cover, though at this point it seems a bit pointless since the paint is already on it’s way out on my car.  Without a doubt, if you have a nice car that you hope to preserve, get yourself a cover so that you don’t have to deal with cosmetic repairs as often as you otherwise would.

Work Place Frustration

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Yahoo had a story about people leaving their jobs or wanting to leave their jobs mainly because of their boss. Bosses realize that so many of the jobs out there that require a college education in a specific field can really be done by just about anyone with a brain so they see employees as being worth less than a dime a dozen. If an employee asks for anything, then they are considered too much of a hassle and are encouraged to look elsewhere for a job.

What’s that? You want your raise to go through on time? Well this job is for people who really love the business, not greedy people out to make money.

What’s that? You don’t want to work third shift anymore even though I told you months ago that I would change your schedule and then gave the better shift to the guy with less seniority? Maybe you should look for a job elsewhere because lots of people have it worse than you.

What’s that? You want to take a week of vacation time all at once? Well this job is more suited for people who are really dedicated to their jobs. No, you can’t roll that vacation time over.

Not to mention the fact that if you stay at your job for years and years, they’ll have to eventually give you raise after raise after raise. What’s that going to do to payroll?!  It’s better for them if you stay for as long as they can use you and then you move on.

Penny Stocks

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Big Dog Stock Picks offers an opportunity to provide growth to up and coming companies by selecting them as their penny stock picks. After researching companies both nationally and internationally, they recommend those companies that are the best financial choices to investors. Their website has several useful sections, the most eye catching of which is the ticker at the top of their home page. When you visit , remember to check out the press release section near the bottom.
