Job Hunting

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

If you’re still coming up in the world and are in high school or college, you are probably looking at the job market right now with despair.

But it turns out not all is lost. Some job fields continue to grow even when it seems like everything is going south. One example would be health care jobs. There just isn’t EVER going to be a time when people stop needing health care and the baby boomers are still retiring leaving positions open in everything from administration to nursing to phlebotomists (if you can handle blood).

If you are early in your college career and can still change your major or if you are still in high school and don’t even know what a major is – look into this field as a way to get your foot into the world of gainful employment.

GI Joe

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

With the summer releases kind of winding down, I still find there’s one that I’m looking forward to. As an adult, I can’t admit to certain movies (harry potter) being on my list. But as a child of the ’80s I’m allowed to say that GI Joe better be good.

It was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid but the only character my flawed memory can remember is Lady Jane. I guess I just thought it was cool that a girl could be in the army. (Insert women’s lib diatribe here)

Go East Young Man

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

With the staggeringly difficult economy forcing people out of work and into a place where they’re looking anywhere and everywhere for a job, many of us find that we have to move far to get a position. The west and California especially seem to be hit by these rough times.

If you are in California, you will most likely be going East to find work so you will have to find moving companies Los Angeles style which is really no different that anywhere else. You decide if you’re going to do it yourself or get professionals and then you call around asking for quotes. If you want to go the extra mile, you take the lowest quote and go back through seeing if someone will beat it.

As a life long do it yourself mover, I look forward to the day when I not only have people to drive the truck for me (and thus don’t have to pay for broken awnings that I’ve driven into) but also the day when I can afford to have people who will pack the stuff for me too.

Ah, to dream.

Blackmailed By a Six Year Old

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

My child tried to emotionally blackmail me into taking him to see the new Harry Potter movie on the release day.

I usually make them wait a little while until it’s convenient for me to go but he had the nerve to say, “Mom, just so you know, if I don’t see Harry Potter on the 15th I’m going to be very, very sad.” This comes from the same kid who has recently told me that there is a ‘HUGE HOLE’ in his life because no girls like him and he’s not sure if he’s ever going to find someone. (He’s six)

Being someone who doesn’t like to be emotionally blackmailed but who will actually does dabble in the art herself, I told him that I would be very, very angry and not take him at all unless he took it back and convinced me he was happy.

I won. But I feel dirty.
