The Alcohol Facial

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

I recently had someone ask me what was behind their ear and I was polite (the truth is always polite, right?) enough to tell them it was a pimple. They looked at me and said, “I didn’t know you could get pimples behind your ear.”

It was a young person. Inexperienced with matters of the skin.

All of us have dealt with skin issues at one point or another and that person was just the latest addition to the club. I was a big fan of cleaning my face with alcohol for awhile there and even tried getting my face sprayed with some kind of really cold gas that I’ve forgotten the name of. I don’t remember it doing much good. In fact the alcohol tended to dry my skin out alot.

Going for a more natural acne treatment might be a better option. At least if it’s natural your less likely to have you skin become dependent upon it just to work and then you can stop using it someday without your skin over reacting to the dryness and over producing oil like mine did when I stopped rubbing alcohol exposure.

Summer Plans

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Since I’ve got the summer off, I intended to spend it cleaning house. In a weird twist of fate I had to clean it all in one day since someone was coming over. Now I have nothing to do for the next two months except maintenance. My whole stinking summer is blown because I can’t wrap my mind around a change in plans. Clearly I’m limited in intellect and imagination since I can’t come up with something else to do that might be more fun than cleaning.

Fortunately, I really just have to wait around a while and instead of maintaining the clean, I’ll wait for it to get messy again. In the mean time I find myself just wasting time. Yesterday I spent literally the entire day reading a book. And eating actually. The only way I’ll ever keep weight off this summer is by cleaning house but the house is clean so I eat. But if I leave the dishes out and let them get moldy then I’ll have to clean again. Phew! Plan created, enormous weight gain averted. I’ll eat my way to weight loss.

Don’t worry I’m sure this will work!

Health Nut

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

The time honored tradition of losing weight through diet and exercise has been a winner since time immortal. Of course now a days we have a wide variety of diet pills to choose from to hopefully help us in the battle of the bulge. I think one of them has even been approved by the FDA. You could also choose to cut out your carbs go on something called the South Beach Diet (presumably you eat sand instead of food).

I think I’ll give the natural approach a try. If that doesn’t work then I’ll talk to my doctor about more drastic measures.

Star Trek and Terminator

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

I can actually make a connection between these two movies and many of you have probably already seen it. If you have then I certainly hope you saw Terminator first because I found that watching Star Trek first detracted from the Terminator experience.

Chekov is John Connor’s DAD?! All I could think while I watched the guy in Terminator is that at any second his Russian accent will pop through and he’ll start muttering “wicktor, wicktor” as his password into someplace. I think Star Trek should have just dumped the character all together (I’ve never been his biggest fan) but they should certainly have warned us if they were going to use the same actor so that I could watch the movies in a better order.

On the up side, Star Trek turns out not to be horrible (thank you Simon Pegg) and Terminator turns out to be too packed with action for us to wonder about all the time loop problems associated with the story line.

As long as you watch Terminator first you shouldn’t have any problems with these movies.

Kitchen Remodeling

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

When we were going to sell our house we had to consider the option of updating our kitchen. Though we ultimately didn’t do it, I looked with longing on other kitchens in magazines and dreamt of what might have been. I coveted the granite counter top and the stainless steel backsplash in one picture only to decide that the tile inlay in another one was far superior only to change my mind back again.

I do hope that some day I’ll either live in a house with a kitchen like one of those I saw or have the guts to go ahead and remodel one to look like those. I don’t know for sure that this will happen mainly because I just don’t use the kitchen that much but a person can dream.

Burning Feeling

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Over the weekend my oldest burned his leg on the exhaust of my scooter. Which lead to a trip to the sink – then the shower when the sink proved too small for an 8 year old (what a surprise) then to my personal library and the internet where we tried to figure out what kind of burn it was. In other words do we need to go to the doctor or not?

The burn itself was about the size of the palm of his hand. It was white in one area where the skin had burned and come off and brown in another where the skin was burned and loose but hadn’t come off yet. I thought this meant it had blistered and popped but the argument was made that this didn’t constitute a blister because those come from under the surface (or something like that). The key difference being that blisters mean one degree of burn and no blisters means another degree of burn but I don’t actually think it would have changed our decision about whether or not to take him to the doctor.

I write this just to lament the dearth of good pictures of burns and their associated degree of burn. I suppose it’s just because people have other things to do when dealing with a burn. I think I’ll add that he’s doing fine and it’s starting to itch.
