Buy memory

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Back in the day when my family first got an IBM computer (yes, IBM actually used to make home PC’s), we had 512K of memory. A short time later, almost every game and program in the world required 640K of memory. By the time I convinced my dad to buy more memory for our computer, the world had moved on and there was no memory for sale in any store we could find for our old IBM. Now when you buy memory, I highly recommend finding an online site so that you can make sure the memory is completely compatible with your system and at the lowest cost.

B is for Boils

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Well Scarlet Fever didn’t make it’s final exit, but I plan on pounding it into submission this week.  The first round of antibiotics didn’t seem to get rid of all of it in my son, so he’s sick again and on a new medicine.  Turns out my other son is allergic to the medicine he was on which is the second time that has happened to him.  Fortunately, he didn’t become allergic until we were almost done with the stuff anyway.

Is it wrong that every time I think ‘scarlet fever’ I start singing ‘Jungle Fever’ in my head.  You know — “I’ve got scarlet fever!  You’ve got scarlet fever!  He’s got scarlet fever!”  That’s all I know of it so that repeats over and over in my head.  I was humming it one day and my sister asked why I kept humming the Blue’s Clues song (‘We just got a letter; we just got a letter; we just got a letter….”).

Oh, please let this be the last illness of the winter.  It’s certainly warm enough for these things to go away.

Dockers role call

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

So I’ve taken my own advice and created my own commercial to be entered into the Dockers contest. This contest is searching for commercials of original content about Dockers pants to be placed online and possibly to be featured in an ad on television. Now I’m not looking for my big break into Hollywood or the world of advertising, but it would be cool to have a commercial that I created this afternoon aired for the whole country to see. Really cool or really embarrassing. Maybe both. More towards really cool if I get a lifetime supply of Dockers. It’s not listed in the contest as far as I know, but here’s hoping.

Organ Stop Pizza

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Tonight we went out for dinner in Mesa to Organ Stop Pizza. It’s the third time I’ve made the trip out to this particular restaurant, yet I’m amazed every time. They serve decent pizza along with assorted bread, pasta, and salad. The main attraction is the immense organ that takes up one whole wall of the two-story building. The organist plays a variety of songs from traditional organ style music to patriotic songs to the theme from Star Wars. Dozens of baffles control the air flow to the scores of pipes behind a plexiglass wall which opens and closes to allow more or less sound into the room. The organ itself rises from under the floor and turns to give everyone a view of the musician as he plays the songs and controls all of the effects including drums, pipes, cowbells, pianos, flags, bubbles, and lights. It is truly an amazing experience to all of your senses.

Dockers contest

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

If you are looking for a pretty simple way of producing a commercial that may get played for millions across the country, check out the new contest at NBC, the Dockers contest. Click on over to www.nbc.com/Dockers and you will find a contest where you can cut together video to make a new commercial for Dockers. My personal favorite so far is the one titled Historically at the bottom of my post.

Just download some files from the contest site at NBC and put together a quick video. Later you can check back in with the site and vote for your favorite video.

Jay Leno and his show got in on the commercial for Dockers by putting together a few pictures of life in San Francisco with Dockers clothing. Most of the commercials on the site right now feature aerial shots of San Francisco bay and the Golden Gate bridge combined with text talking about Dockers pants and clothing. The Tonight Show showed pictures of John Melendez wearing Dockers clothing in San Francisco with random strangers. Even though that video is up on the NBC site, I don’t think you have to worry about competing against Jay Leno. I’m pretty sure they’re not eligible for the contest.

So get your video submitted and good luck getting it on television. Then use your new found power to become an ad executive or movie producer or something.

Iron Man review

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Great movie. Great, great movie.

If the greatest measurement of a film is the degree to which someone is entertained, then this was a great movie. Robert Downey, Jr. carried the film with ease to bring this comic book to life. I didn’t even recognize Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane. Gwyneth Paltrow was a delight as Tony Stark’s secretary, and Terrence Howard is excellent as friend, Jim Rhodes (hopefully coming back in the sequel as War Machine).

The movie starts in familiar territory for Iron Man fans. Tony Stark, billionaire weapons designer, is kidnapped by terrorists in Afghanistan and forced to build them a powerful rocket. Instead, he builds an iron suit that allows him to escape. Disgusted with the realization that his weapons are being used by these terrorists, Stark builds a new and more powerful suit after returning home.

The overall plot of the entire film is fairly simple. After returning home Iron Man must battle another suit called Iron Monger. The joy and entertainment of the film comes from the great interaction and dialogue between the characters. Even the slow parts of the movie between the action sequences are extremely entertaining.

I highly recommend Iron Man and can only hope that the rest of the summer’s blockbusters live up to the entertainment value of this first offering.
