You may not need it that often, but occasionally you may want to look up the phone number that just called you to find out who it was. It happens to me a couple of times every year, when I get a call, and want to find out who it was. A Reverse Cell Phone Lookup is a handy little tool to do this very thing. If you’re concerned about your name getting out in one of these directories, look into a National No Call Registry.

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008Night Watch review
Tuesday, April 29th, 2008A few years ago I saw a preview for a cool-looking Russian film called “Nochnoy Dozor” or “Night Watch”. The preview was full of dark, moody settings, and a secret war of immortals, some of whom may or may not be vampires. It looked pretty cool, and reportedly was the highest grossing movie in Russian history, but months later had still not yet hit American theaters.
Eventually, an American version was released, dubbed in English, and edited to American tastes. It came out to mediocre reviews before disappearing fairly quickly. The sequel, “Day Watch,” has also come and gone.
A few weeks ago I finally tracked down an original, subtitled, version of the film. Well, it’s different.
I often hear complaints that a movie spent too much time on setup and not enough actually telling the story. You won’t hear anyone making that complaint against “Night Watch.” There is a brief opening sequence that tells of when the good and evil immortals fought an ancient battle that ended in an uneasy truce. After that, it’s hold on and try not to get lost. Huge portions of the plot and backstory and physics and setting of the story are left unexplained. The immortal Others can move in and out of an invisible dimension called the Gloom, but the rules and details of which are never explained.
The movie looks really cool, but is very difficult to follow, and serves as a jumping off point into a larger story. I eventually understood everything that was in the movie, but some of it only after most of the movie had gone by. Characters are thrown in with little introduction, and some plot lines don’t seem to matter too much to the movie as a whole. I hope that the sequels can bring a movie with lots of potential to a wider audience.
You Make My Energy Pop Contest
Tuesday, April 29th, 2008In the world of energy drinks, I find they’re pretty much all the same – inconvenient. Why would I hold a can for as long as it takes me to drink the thing while it gets warmer and warmer (I like all my drinks ice cold even when it’s not appropriate right down to my iced hot chocolate)?
I want something that will help me keep going that I doesn’t require that I type on my blog one handed. I can get that from the MAXXED Energy Pop. I just eneterd the You Make My Energy Pop Contest on their web site and now I’m hoping to win the XBox 360 Elite Bundle and $100 Gift Certificate. The energy pops will help me stay up late to play the video games and wake up early to get my real job done.
Don’t worry, I still plan on finding time to sleep.
If you’ve got a blog you can enter too. If you don’t then try entering the Keep Going Sweepstakes where you could win a XBox 360 Elite Bundle just like the rest of us.
If you would, please take a moment now to click on my energy meter and help give me a little energy.
Thanks!
Legal Conundrum
Tuesday, April 29th, 2008The award for Classiest Lawsuit (Not) has been awarded and it goes to the Spitzer Girl.
The award for Classiest Defense Against a Lawsuit (Not) goes to the Guy from Girls Gone Wild.
The first is suing the second for $10million saying he had no right to use her name to promote his videos and that, since she was drunk and 17 when he filmed her, she couldn’t have understood what he was filming her for.
His defense is that since she was drunk and 17 she couldn’t have legally entered into a contract so he doesn’t need to have one. But he says he has her on tape with he ID giving consent.
I wouldn’t want to have to decide that case.
A Girl Can Dream
Monday, April 28th, 2008My husband said he wanted a projector and brought home his brother’s to convince me. It worked. I said he could get a projector.
Little did I know that he meant the whole package – the projector – the screen – 8 speakers to hang around the room – and two towers to house a whole mess of electronics he wanted to connect to the projector and speakers.
I did put my foot down when he wanted to gigantic speakers from the ceiling but other than that, I’ve been pretty happy with the thing. If I REALLY had my way, though, the whole thing would be in its own room with some really cool seats and home theater lighting instead of in my living/dining room.
It’s not too bad since the screen goes up and the speakers blend in where they are (in a cabinet). But a girl can dream.
Congratualtions
Monday, April 28th, 2008So the house sold and alot of people have been offering us congratulations. Each time I hear it though, I get confused.
My first thought is always, “I’m not pregnant! How rude of them to assume I am!”
Then I think, “They’re not usually that rude and they DID sound sincere….Maybe they weren’t talking about what I thought they were talking about.”
Then I think, “Well if they aren’t congratulating me on being pregnant, what on Earth could they be talking about?”
Hmmmmm…..
Oh yeah, they must be talking about the house.
“Thank you!” I say quickly each time. Little do they know the list of comebacks I was planning on picking a retort from before I figured out what was going on.
This little hang up of mine comes from me being pregnant often and when I’m not pregnant, people ask if I am. Without fail it’s a female asking. You’d think they would know not to do that.
Oh well.
Logos and business cards
Saturday, April 26th, 2008I’ve been toying with the idea of getting some really slick looking business cards to go along with this blog and some of the other random stuff I put together on the computer. In my clicking around the net I found a site that specializes in logo design and business cards. In less than five minutes I had designed the card below using their quick and easy to use online design tool. They have hundreds of logos that can go on the card and dozens of choices during the creation process.

Righteous Kill
Saturday, April 26th, 2008Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino will once again hit the big screen in the same movie. This will only be the third time they’ve ever been in the same movie, the previous two being “The Godfather Part II” where they never shared the screen and “Heat” where they barely ever shared the screen.
In this one, “Righteous Kill” due out in September, they will be playing NYPD detectives and who are working together so they will constantly be sharing scenes. Not to metion the fact the the roles seem somehow appropriate what with New Yorkers playing New Yorkers. I have high hopes for this one.
One Fewer Thing to Worry About
Friday, April 25th, 2008Each time April rolls around I have to remember to pay the premium on the kids’ life insurance policies. That’s right, I insure the kids. It’s just enough to cover a funeral but I have no intention of ever saving up for something like that so the only way I would ever afford a decent burial is if they’re insured. Of course, nothing is ever going to happen but having the insurance gives me one fewer thing to worry about.
Life is idyllic.
Friday, April 25th, 2008Finally the last horrible week has ended. Scarlet fever is gone, impetigo has cleared up and constipation has set in (that’s far better than the alternative). I get to sleep in tomorrow and then go for a bike ride. My life is practically idyllic.
Unless you count the fact that my daughter just broke down because I won’t take off her shoe and my younger sin shoved a stretchy frog where a stretchy frog should never be shoved. (Don’t panic – he put it inside a hard to reach portion of a transformer.)
I don’t count those little quirks so life IS idyllic.
SocialSpark
Thursday, April 24th, 2008Our friends at Izea, responsible for the widely successful PayPerPost, have just launched their newest endeavor on the web, SocialSpark. This website promises to be the newest success story in the blogging world.
The biggest issue for most bloggers out there is gaining traffic. SocialSpark is designed around this idea. Driving traffic to the members’ sites. The community approach that the site brings encourages the kind of social networking activity that has made success stories out of many other familiar websites. Combining these efforts to drive traffic and create an open community, SocialSpark also is a great way to earn some extra money from your blogging efforts. SocialSpark doesn’t just want you to post a link and collect your money. This site encourages real opinions from their member blogs while showing full disclosure of what is a sponsored post.
Their new marketplace gives many different options in how to participate in the blogging community. The post option is still featured and gives a blogger cash to write an opinion on a given topic. The reservation system works much better than other sites where you have to keep hitting refresh to sign up for any good posts. Another option in the marketplace is to exchange posts with another blogger. Two bloggers write articles about the other bloggers site for free.
The new site is easily navigated with only a few minor glitches as they work through the Beta phase. The full disclosure of sponsored posts makes it very search engine friendly.

Halva
Thursday, April 24th, 2008My wife’s family has some strange traditions. Some, like the birthday parade, are cute and I quietly endure them, while others are just kind of weird.
Around the holidays my in-laws house is full to the rim with all sorts of strange sweets. Unfortunately, there are few that I find appetizing. The chocolate-covered orange peel is just a strange mixture of wonderful chocolate surrounding something that should have been thrown out. The maple sugar candy has a flavor better suited to breakfast, not dessert.
The worst is halva. A strange Middle Eastern dessert that combines crushed sesame seeds, honey, and chocolate. You may be saying to yourself that all of those ingredients sound good. It just goes to show that some things just shouldn’t be combined.
Faucet Outlet
Thursday, April 24th, 2008Last year when we decided to fix up a number of home repairs, one of which was the kitchen faucet. This was a little difficult because our kitchen has a wall mounted faucet. We had to search for a while to find the right style. Check out the web if you’re looking for kitchen faucets, especially if you’re looking for something hard to find or at a great discount.
House for sale
Thursday, April 24th, 2008After weeks and months of waiting, it finally happened.
There was someone out there who wanted to buy our house. Actually, there were two. That’s right, after all this time, we had two offers to buy the house at the same time. Weird, huh?
Here’s hoping that everything goes through with the inspection and soon enough, we’ll be on our way to our new digs. Wherever those might be.
Coming out of my shell
Monday, April 21st, 2008Recently, I posted a very embarrassing story that involved a candle. Here is the full text of that story.
Over the years as this story has spread from my small group of friends to a wider group of friends to the internet and now to video, I find it less and less embarrassing each time. Initially, I was beet red over it.
By “coming out of my shell” I’ve opened myself up to share an embarrassing, yet very funny, story with the world.
Next time you get a chance, come out of your shell and give Gulf oysters a try.
Fingerprint expert
Monday, April 21st, 2008General Mills has a new promotion with their current boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Each piece of cereal has a fingerprint pattern on it, while the box gives you a fingerprint, and multiple suspect fingerprints to match it to.
I just wish that they would have talked to a fingerprint expert before printing up millions of boxes and billions of pieces of cereal. Most of the information on the box is correct, but there are some facts that they have listed that are incorrect or, at best, only partially correct.
But hey, if it sells more cereal, you cares.
Email Marketing Application
Monday, April 21st, 2008When marketing your blog, the most important thing, by far, is to reach the greatest number of people. Actually, let’s make that the second most important thing. The most important is to have the greatest number of people read your blog. Reaching a lot of people is important, generating hits and clicks is important, but when people start actually reading your blog, then it can take off into another level with readers recommending your blog to other readers and then people actually returning to your site on a regular basis because they care what you have to say, or write as the case may be.
Zookoda lets you send a summary of everything that you’ve been writing directly into the email inbox of your visitors. The convenience of getting this material in a form that they check everyday will definitely increase the number of readers that your site is getting. You can’t substitute this kind of boost to readers.
The program also allows for complete customization of the email that you send out to your visitors. Making the email into an eye-catching newsletter can get a lot of attention from readers that otherwise may just hit the delete key when your blog entries show up in their inbox.
But the best feature of Zookoda, by far, is the price. This program is completely free. There is no drawback from using this program to start boosting the number of visitors that you get to your site, but more importantly, the number of readers that keep coming back to your site to see what new content you’ve got today.

Rock Band rocks
Monday, April 21st, 2008While Guitar Hero broke new ground in what a video game could be, Rock Band takes things a bit further. Guitar Hero remains one of my favorite games because of the fun and the challenge of playing cool songs on the guitar. However, no matter how much fun it is, it’s still only a toy guitar and is a poor substitute for actually playing a guitar.
Rock Band’s introduction of the microphone and drum kit gives a measure of reality into this genre of video game. Even though the drum kit is a very much toned down version of a typical set of drums, the player is still playing the drums. The singer is given some latitude in pitch depending on the difficulty level but is still singing the song.
The only drawback of the game is the wireless guitar. The strum bar is loose and difficult to play, the neck is too thin and painful to hold. The buttons are at the same level as the rest of the fret board, making them difficult to distinguish from each other just by touch. The gravity switch is difficult to activate when you lift the neck of the guitar and yet sometimes activates at the slightest movement at an unwanted time.
Thankfully, I can just keep using my Guitar Hero guitar on this game.
Vacation condo in Branson
Saturday, April 19th, 2008As vacation season is quickly approaching, consider finding someplace relaxing, fun, and not too far away. I would much rather stay for two or three weeks in a great relaxing retreat than try to cram my entire vacation into just a couple of days.
Those quick vacations can leave you more tired than when you left, but renting a Branson condo this summer can be the perfect vacation. Save money on travel costs, get more vacation for your dollar, go golfing, go to the lake, and see a beautiful part of the country.
GO JOE (the movie)
Saturday, April 19th, 2008The downfall of the western world continues.
Now, that wasn’t exactly fair. GI Joe: The Movie could turn out to be the greatest hit and most remarkable piece of cinema ever produced. It could score an emotional hit on the entire world and go down as not only the best film of the year but greatest adaptation of a cartoon ever. The plotline and characters could be exact matches to everything that everyone remembers and thinks they remember about the original show. It could go on to boost military enlistments and restore worldwide faith in the American military. It could start an entire series of films, each better than the last, that culminates in the greatest triumph of cinematic art that humankind has or will ever create.
It could.
I just doubt it.
