The Gas is Killing Me

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I’m sure we’re all choking over the price of gas at the pump.  Is it wrong to hope for a recession in China just so oil demand decreases?

Since the car fire (see my previous blog post here), we’ve been making due with one car pretty well, but carpooling hasn’t cut the gas bill – it’s gone up, up, up.   We now do a 30 mi roundtrip commute – twice a day since I need the car to pick up my son from school in the afternoon.  This ends up being about 18mi more per day than when we had two cars.  Maybe this isn’t the definition of carpooling, but we did get a car off the road.  Too bad it wasn’t the less fuel efficient one.

I think we now spend as much on gas as we do on food.  You know what that means, right?

We need to eat more.

Want a Wii?

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

My husband has hinted heavily that he would like a Wii for his birthday. I just don’t think we need ANOTHER new system. On the other hand, I’ve seen several contests lately offering one as a prize and I see no reason to keep it from him if I should happen to get one for free. Except for the fact that I don’t think we need another system.

Do me a favor and enter as well so that the odds of my winning it aren’t quite as good. Click Here for a Chance to Win a Nintendo® Wii™! While you’re there, you might choose to bid on their auction as well. Charter High Speed is giving away high speed internet access for life. Not exactly giving it away – they’re offering it to the highest bidder and the minimum bid is $10.00 with no reserve. That’s almost like giving it away.

If I’ve entered the contest and win anyway, I promise to accept the grand prize with grace and humility and my post about it will read something like this:

“Nanny, nanny, boo boo! I won and YOU didn’t! Haha!”

Like I said, grace and humility is what I’m all about.

Pancreatic Cancer

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Darn it.  Patrick Swayze has pancreatic cancer.  I hoped the fact that the first source I heard on this was the National Enquirer meant that it was a total fabrication but now his doctor has confirmed it but says they are optimistic.

I remember when Micheal Landon had it and told America he was going to fight and beat it.  I thought he would but it was advanced and things didn’t turn out so well.  Swayze’s doctor says that his is has a “limited” amount of disease and is responding to treatment so hopefully this story turns out much better than Michael Landon’s.

And guess what one of the leading causes of pancreatic cancer is?  Smoking.  And guess what the prognosis is?  Worse than lung cancer.  Studies show that 3-5% of all people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will still be alive 5 years after the diagnosis; with lung cancer it’s closer to 15%.  As a comparison, those with breast cancer or prostate cancer have survival rates in the 90% range after 5 years.  The only hopes for people diagnosed with pancreatic or lung cancer are to be diagnosed in a very early stage where survival rates are higher and treatment is more effective or a miracle.

I’m going to stop there or I might start sounding bitter about the amount of money spent on research for lung cancer treatments which is off topic anyway.
