Update For Data Security

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

A new year means an opportunity to update your business’s security. I don’t mean you need to change the alarm. I mean you need to check what level of security you have on your computer and make sure what you have is adequate.

If you have none or yours is out of date, consider Symantec Endpoint Protection. Symantec is famous for their AntiVirus software (which this includes) and their Firewall software (which this includes). It helps protect your information from worms and viruses among other malevolent programs that may come your way.

Have peace of mind when you are using Symantec’s tried and true security system.

Does A Better Site Always Mean A Slower Site?

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

I have a question.  With all those sites out there that have all these plug ins and take 20 minutes to load if you have dial up, aren’t there any sites that don’t?  Does such a thing exist – a website that loads quickly on dial up?

I’m happy to say I have a form of high speed but there’s this one site I went to today that took ages to load.  I can’t imagine what I would do with dial up.  I’ve heard slow loading pages could be caused by a sites server but I’ve had some days where it seems like everything is going slowly no matter where I’m trying to connect from.

Maybe people should consider simplifying their code instead of putting more add ons on their site.  Simple can be beautiful.

I’ve got to go now – I’m trying to re-tool my blog so that it’s bigger and better.

Being Happy With Pink

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

I’ve got two little girls so soon I’ll have to face the reality that one or *gasp* BOTH of them will like pink things. I know I shouldn’t try to force color preference on them, that it is natural for girls (and boys for that matter) to like some of my less favorite colors. With my boys, though I knew society was on my side with the pink issue and they would take care of it even I didn’t.

I’m thinking about all the pink gifts my girls get every birthday and Christmas and I know at some point I too will join the gang because they like them so much. At least I can rest assured that I can get pink tool kits or pink drills at house-of-cool.com. I can certainly live with that.

Maybe I’ll even learn to like it.

I’m Pushing Back My Retirment

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

My retirement accounts lost money for the first time ever. It figures – I just found out how to take some money out of just bonds (the safe but little gains approach) and put them in something else. I didn’t go crazy and take out everything and put it in international stocks (which actually did fine last quarter) or something.

So I guess that means we’re in a recession. Yes, the world revolves around my portfolio. As my accounts go, so goes the world. It couldn’t be the other way around.

I’m happy to report that since I didn’t have much saved for retirement, I didn’t lose much. I’m thinking I’ll just ride it out with things as they are and see what happens next quarter.

Get YOUR RealRank

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

So lately, I’ve been a part of the Izea Community and I’m really enjoying it. They have interesting forums that I find I just HAVE to get caught up on daily. I’m still too chicken to contribute – I just read anonymously.

A little while ago (about 1 or 2 months I think) they came up with a new way to rank a blog. It isn’t Google’s Page Rank and it’s different from Alexa too. It’s RealRank through IzeaRanks.com. The biggest difference between this new way and the old ways is that IzeaRanks ranks just blogs.

Alexa includes any site that allows them to. But what blogger really cares how their blog stacks up against Amazon or ebay anyway? And Page Rank doesn’t compare you to anything other than some algorithm that assigns a number from 0 to 10. Does it mean you’re on top if you’ve got a PR 10? Who knows?

Here’s a peek at what the site looks like. (I’m letting you see my RealRank!)

That’s the data for my RealRank for the last month. I think I’m in an upward trend! (You can also access data on your Page Views and Uniques Visitors.)

There’s a little code to embed in your site so Izea can track your data for you and, though my information is public, you can request that yours be kept private. Take a little time to sign up, embed the code and see where your blog ranks in the blogosphere!
