GPS tracking

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

When company vehicles are issued to employees for company business, problems sometimes develop because the employees have little or no supervision. Often the employers have some sort of idea that employees are not working throughout the day while out in the company vehicle because of a drop in productivity or a lower quality of work or longer work hours than other employees. No matter the reason, this drop in productivity will eventually affect the company’s bottom line through extra overtime, hiring new employees, purchasing new equipment, and higher employee turnover.

I’ve recently read a Blog for GPS vehicle tracking written by concerned parents. The parents installed a GPS device in their kids’ vehicles to keep track of where they were and when they were there. Almost every teen has a cell phone now, but some parents want to have a little more control over where their kids go. GPS tracking allows the kids to have the freedom that comes with a car, but also allows their parents to rest assured knowing that their kids aren’t putting themselves into danger.

Using a system like the GPS Insight vehicle tracking system will almost certainly raise the eyebrows of those concerned about companies spying on their employees and parents spying on their kids. However, there are many companies that would be unable to give their employees the benefits of a company car without being able to monitor the location of the vehicle in some way. Similarly, many parents would not feel comfortable enough to let their kids drive a car at such a young age without being able to track where they go. Systems like this GPS tracking system allow companies to give their employees a company car without losing control of what happens when the employee is driving around.

The price for these systems are very affordable even for companies with fairly large fleets. The site lists most prices at between $1.50 and $2.00 per day per vehicle. For companies that have large fleets of vehicles out on the road this type of service is almost a necessity. The saving in fuel costs, vehicle routing, overtime, and efficiency should more than pay for the cost of tracking the vehicles.

Even if your company doesn’t have its own IT department, vehicle tracking can be easy to set up. There is a very detailed page to answer all sorts of questions about how to set up and operate the system at the GPS Insight support wiki for customers.

The image below shows how powerful the software can be by locating multiple vehicles on an interactive map.

Shopping Cart Software

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

It’s getting to the point where many of the people I know are actually venturing into the world of business and are starting their own stores. Good golly we’re growing up! Fortunately there are alot of business models out there to look at for inspiration like Amazon and ebay. Their web sites have all the bells and whistles like the shopping cart and click to pay options. Do you ever wonder how you might get together all the ecommerce software you’ll need to start your own web store? Ashop Commerce may be the solution for you. They have web based software to help your customers navigate buying your merchandise as smoothly as they do on those big name web sites. Their software allows you to utilize the ‘shopping cart’ option so popular nowadays as well as accept credit card payments. If you are thinking about starting an e-store or have one going but would like to improve its accessibility, this may be the solution for you.

Ender’s Game, the movie

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

For the better part of a decade now the film version of the classic sci-fi book “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card has been floundering in the continuous state of pre-production and rewrites.

For those unfamiliar with the story, Ender is a child genius of sorts in the future who is recruited by the military to begin training to help defend the Earth from bug-like alien invaders. The recruits at battle school are children, and Ender is the smallest and youngest of all of them.

The book is considered a modern classic of science fiction, and the movie (if it ever gets made) has the potential to rank among the greatest space stories on the big screen. The biggest problem facing the potential filmmakers is the psychological themes that wind their way through the plot. They are perfectly explored in the books, but may not be as easy to convey in a movie with child actors. Next to that, the zero gravity laser tag battles in the academy will be easy to pull off.

Wolfgang Peterson was attached at one time and hopefully will return to direct. This is one book adaptation that I am cautiously optimistic can succeed on the big screen.

Protection for the iPod

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

I recently got an iPod as a gift from a sibling who got it for free. As luck would have it, it was stolen but then that same sibling won another and gave it to me. WOOHOO! Of course now I have no reasonable expectation that if anything at all happens to this one that I will get yet another as a freebie so I watch out for it. I keep it in safe places away from small hands and I installed an alarm to keep it away from sticky fingers (really that’s for everything but you get my drift). Despite all that, I’m continually worrying that pulling it out of it’s port will somehow damage it or that it will get dropped and never work again or (worst of all possible problems) it might get scratched up. And this is a fine looking red iPod I’ve got here.  So I’m looking for additional protection. I found an ipod case that’s made of the same material as is used on the leading edge of helicopter blades to protect them. If you need something like this for your devices, you should look into the invisibleSHIELD as they call it at shieldzone.com.  They have covers available in shapes and sizes to fit most devices including that iPhone you just got for Christmas (congratulations, you have made me jealous).

Improve Mileage

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

Instead of just complaining about the gas price (like you don’t already know it’s high and I’ve done that enough) I found a site with interesting ideas about how to save gas.  I’ve heard many of them before and I don’t know they’re all accurate but maybe they are all worth looking into.

GAAAAAAS!

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

You know aside from my house payment and food, gas takes the biggest chunk of change out of my wallet each month.  All my utility bills together add up to less than I spend on gasoline.  I just read that futures topped $100/barrel today and that gas prices aren’t likely to ebb until spring when production increases for the summer driving season (of course then people will be driving so all that extra production won’t matter anyway).  Bummer.

Moving? Get Help

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

Most of you out there know the rottenness that is moving. Should you get a friend who has a truck to help you move or should you rent a truck? If you have the choice, don’t go with either. During one of my family’s many moves, we crashed the moving truck into an awning and the place we were moving into charged us an arm and a leg for repairs. What a great way to make an impression on your landlord, right? Then there was the time we were moving and threw out an old mattress and it caught fire. That was great – fill a garbage can full of water in the bathtub and haul it to the mattress, repeat. What you should really do is save up for one of many Moving Companies to come handle the hassle for you. There’s a web site called homebulletin.net that gives you tools to handle the move without having to do the driving and hauling from house to truck and back. You can find out what Moving Companies are in your area and get free quotes. They also offer a checklist of things you need to do before during and after the move to transition smoothly.

End of Analog TV

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

The government program giving coupons for money off the new digital conversion boxes has begun.  If you haven’t heard about this then listen up.  In 2009, TV stations will have to change to digital signals and give up their analog ones so many TVs will stop receiving the signal unless you buy a converter box for each TV that doesn’t receive digital signals.  This change should not affect those who pay for their TV service as long as you continue to do so.  The web site to go to to get the coupons (which will cover most but not all of the cost of a converter) is www.dtv2009.gov.  Don’t be too surprised if you haven’t heard about this.  Although they started signing people up for coupons, they say after you’ve signed up that the boxes aren’t even available for purchase yet.
